The Ashford Tree Trail – A Community Arts Project for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year
The Ashford Tree Trail will be a visual spectacle growing across Ashford town, created by the local community and artists from Animate Arts Company. Collaboratively they will make an installation of decorated trees that will form a trail across the town centre of Ashford for the Jubilee weekend and throughout June 2022.
The Ashford Tree Trail will be an orchard of curated trees ‘planted’ over various secure locations across the town, from local parks to shopping centres, and all in a public space for audiences to visit and enjoy.
Whilst this centrally located Tree Trail is being made for the town centre, the project would like to see more trees being made and displayed in locations across the borough, hopefully resulting in a total of 70 registered trees on the map to appropriately mark HM Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign. To support this ambition, Animate Artists are creating a free download-able creative pack of ‘how to create a Trail Tree’, with ideas and activities to decorate a tree for the trail. This will be available for any group, school, local business or individual and can be downloaded from www.ashford.gov.uk/ashford-tree-trail from beginning of April onwards.
Central to the trail will be the Jubilee Blossom Tree, which will made entirely from paper and cardboard by professional artists at Animate Arts. Its branches will be adorned with seeded, paper blossom and each flower will carry a hand-written message of hope for 2022 and beyond. Blossom is the precursor to growing fruit so these symbolic, fruitful wishes will reap a good harvest for the future of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Ashford.
